Iraq Oil Product Exports and Logistics Needs

The Iraqi government is taking important steps in export processes in order to diversify the economy and increase revenue sources outside crude oil. According to data from Baghdad, Iraq has reached a remarkable volume by exporting more than 8 million tons of petroleum products in the last 9 months.

With the decision signed by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani on December 18, 2025, a technical committee was established to improve export processes and make maritime shipping operations more efficient. The main goal of the government is to optimize transportation processes and increase the amount of foreign currency entering the state treasury.

The Need for Logistics Fleet and Infrastructure Is Growing

According to the evaluations of economists, Iraq has deficiencies in local logistics capacity to meet its current export potential. Experts state that Iraq has a limited number of vessels capable of carrying oil and petroleum derivatives. For this reason, a large part of export operations is carried out by foreign logistics companies and international fleets.

Data from Iraq’s State Oil Marketing Organization, SOMO, also confirms this activity. In the first three quarters of the year, a total of 8,573,070 tons of petroleum products were exported. The majority of exports, approximately 7.7 million tons, consisted of fuel oil, also known as “black oil”. Due to technical limitations in refinery infrastructure, a high amount of fuel oil is obtained from each processed barrel of oil. This makes continuous and high-tonnage shipment of this product to global markets necessary.

The Increase in Exports and the Importance of Logistics Solutions

According to SOMO data, exports increased by 131,000 tons compared to the same period of the previous year. Reports from the Iraqi Ministry of Finance show that oil revenues continue to account for 90% of total income.
