UN Secretary-General Guterres Announced in Baghdad: “Iraq Is Now a Safe and Stable Country”
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres delivered highly important messages for the global business world and the logistics sector during his official visit to Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. Speaking at the ceremony held on the occasion of the successful completion of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, UNAMI, Guterres announced that Iraq has now left the “period of crisis” behind.
In this new period, in which the trade volume between Iraq and Turkey is expected to increase, the emphasis on “confidence” from the United Nations drew attention.
“The World Must Understand That Iraq Is Safe”
Guterres, who was welcomed with an official ceremony at Baghdad International Airport and met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani, emphasized that Iraq has overcome difficult years marked by terrorism and foreign interventions.
Guterres delivered the following clear message to the international public:
“We have witnessed Iraq’s determination to overcome terrorism, foreign interference and challenges. Today, Iraq is a normal country with security and stability, and the world must understand this.”
From Crisis Management to a Period of Development and Investment
Iraqi Prime Minister Sudani stated after the meeting that the end of the UNAMI mission, which has been operating in the country since 2003, is not a separation but the beginning of a new partnership.
Sudani stated that Iraq is no longer a country that only manages crises, but one that focuses on long-term development and sustainable growth plans. Emphasizing that the service and development projects launched by the government over the last three years will continue with determination, Sudani said, “We have managed to keep Iraq away from regional crises by basing our foreign policy on balance and national interests.”
New Opportunities for Logistics and Trade
The United Nations’ description of Iraq as a safe region and the Iraqi government’s announcement that it will accelerate development projects are of great importance for Turkish exporters and the logistics sector doing business with the region. As the perception of war and crisis is replaced by the perception of stability and investment, trade traffic between Turkey and Iraq is expected to accelerate further.
Guterres also added that although the mission has ended, UN-affiliated development and humanitarian aid organizations will continue to work for the reconstruction of Iraq.
